‘It is night. No one is asleep.’

Screening this month in ArtReview’s Art Lovers Movie Club, Maya Schweizer and Clemens von Wedemeyer’s Metropolis. Report from China (2004-06) is a documentary essay revolving around the artists’ trip to China in 2004, and research for an adaptation of Fritz Lang’s eponymous 1927 film. Schweizer and Von Wedemeyer’s film reflects on the tragedy of modernity, the creation of the Chinese megacity and the relationship between fiction, myth-making and utopia – shifting between interviews with migrant workers and architects, from Beijing to Shanghai, to Lang’s own future visions.
