The Museum of Modern Art York has acquired the Rainbow Flag for its design collection, following the acquisition of other icons like the @ and recycling symbols. Created by hand in 1978 by artist Gilbert Baker, the flag was first raised in the United Nations Plaza in San Francisco that same year, and soon became an iconic and collective symbol for the LGBTQ community.

The acquisition coincides with global celebrations for Gay Pride Month.
