He has been a researcher at the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) since 1993. From 2002 to 2008, he served as the first associate curator of Latin American Art Collections at Tate Modern, London. From 2013 to 2024, he was the chief curator at the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), Mexico City.
