Francisco Correa Cordero, who founded New York’s Lubov gallery, has died. The 37-year-old’s death was described as peaceful.
\n\n\n\nThe gallery, which Cordero opened in Chinatown in 2017, represented a small group of artists, but has staged shows with many more. A recent exhibition by My Barbarian, the group’s first since a Whitney Museum solo show, featured work that ‘celebrate(s) queer, leftist agency’, Louis Bury wrote in ArtReview. Painter Kane Huynh is due to have an exhibition at the gallery in the Autumn.
\n\n\n\nThe gallery’s roster features Theodore Darst, Bryce Kroll, Marsha Pels, Connor Marie Stankard and Harry Tafoya. Previously artists including Jenna Westra, Victor Boullet and pairings of Andres Serrano and Benjamin Bertocci, Jon Rafman and Parker Ito, have shown at the space.
\n\n\n\nBorn in Mexico, Cordero came to the US to study photography at the School of Visual Arts, taking jobs and organising shows at Yancey Richardson Gallery, Martos Gallery, Aperture, Humble Arts Foundation, the Richard Avedon Foundation and Exit Art. He was Independent Curators International’s Executive Coordinator from 2015 to 2022 and served on the board of KAJE, an experimental exhibition space located in Gowanus, Brooklyn.
