Director of Art Hong Kong
‘Lots of people have their eye on Hong Kong, it is the best-performing market and China’s bonded warehouse’, Iwan Wirth told The Art Newspaper earlier this year. Magnus Renfrew, director of Art Hong Kong, is rapidly establishing himself as one of the gatekeepers of this haven for tax-free art sales.
While it’s still very much in the process of bedding in, the fair – now in its third edition – attracted 46,000 visitors this year (up 60 percent on last year), major galleries (Gagosian, White Cube, Hauser & Wirth, Arario, Pace, Perrotin, Boesky, Lisson, Cohan, Castelli, etc) and most important, sales. Whether the fair can maintain its position as the meeting point for East and West is one of the challenges facing Renfrew in the years ahead.
