ArtReview Asia Xiàn Chǎng is a special exhibition programme at West Bund Art & Design, Shanghai, curated by ArtReview Asia. Projects in ArtReview Asia Xiàn Chǎng, by artists from around the world, occupy spaces inside the fair venue and along the bank of West Bund. The curatorial concept originates from the Chinese characters for ‘xiàn' and ‘chǎng’, which together mean ‘the scene’, exploring how the temporal attributes embedded in the term ‘contemporary art’ create or gain valid significance within a contextualized milieu. Produced, exhibited, and then put into circulation, contemporary artworks are often reduced to consumption goods due to the fragmentation of their contexts.
ArtReview Asia Xiàn Chǎng officially launched at West Bund Art & Design in 2016 with 25 works by 25 artists. Hao Jingfang and Wang Lingjie were the recipients of the prize awarded by the reviewing committee, composed of members including Hou Hanru and Clara Kim.
For the 2017 edition, 29 invited artists from 16 countries presented 32 works – 13 of which were new commissions. The winner of 2017 Xiàn Chǎng was Beijing-based artist Wang Wei. He was selected by Turin-based collector and art patron Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, president of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaundengo, and Hong Kong-based collector and art patron Adrian Cheng, founder of K11 and the K11 Art Foundation.
