New US$1 million Nomura Art Award announced

A new contemporary visual arts award has been announced by Japanese financial services group Nomura Holdings, Inc. It will be the largest cash award yet, with US$1 million being awarded to an artist who has produced a body of work ‘of major cultural significance’. Two further awards of US$100,000 each to emerging artists. The prize will be inaugurated this year, with recipients chosen by an independent and international jury comprising: Doryun Chong, deputy director, curatorial and chief curator, M+; Kathy Halbreich, executive director, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation; Yuko Hasegawa, artistic director, Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; Max Hollein, director, The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Nicholas Serota, Chair, Arts Council England; Allan Schwartzman, founder and principal of Art Agency, Partners, and Chairman, Fine Arts Division of Sotheby’s.

On 21 May, 2019, a press conference in Kyoto will announce the winners of the US$100,000 prizes for emerging artists. The US$1 million Nomura Art Award will be announced at a gala ceremony in Shanghai in October 2019.
