Maike Cruse has been appointed fair director of Art Basel in Basel, stepping down from her current position as the director of Gallery Weekend Berlin, whose 19th edition took place last weekend.

Cruse has directed Gallery Weekend Berlin since 2014. From 2012 to 2016, Cruse was the artistic director at ABC Art Berlin Contemporary, after which she became the director of Art Berlin until 2019. Between 2008 and 2011, she was the head of communications at Art Basel. Cruse will start her new role in the coming July and will oversee Art Basel 2024.

‘I look forward to returning to Art Basel and developing it further together with its dedicated team. I haven’t missed a single edition of Art Basel for almost 20 years, and as Director of Gallery Weekend Berlin, I was in constant exchange with the fair, also because many of our Berlin-based galleries have been taking part in it over the years. It has been a great pleasure to lead it for so many years and I’m deeply honored to take Art Basel into the future,’ Cruse said in a statement.
