Although her name suggests chic street clothes and a profitable chain of stores, Agnès B. (née Trouble) is also a noted mover on the international art scene. She opened her first Paris gallery, Galerie du Jour, in 1984; now the ex-art student has showing spaces in Hong Kong and Manhattan’s SoHo as well. In 2004, b.’s mettle as a collector became clear when she showed a selection of her installation, photo and video works in the old abattoirs at Toulouse. Among artists represented were Gillian Wearing, Cathy de Monchaux, Nan Goldin, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Jean-Michel Basquiat. agnès b. is also a noted sponsor and patron, underwriting Tate Modern’s showing of pornographic art films, Destricted, in September 2006, and the Royal College of Art’s annual photography prize.
