Charles Schwab made his billions as founder of one of the world’s most successful brokerage firms: Charles Schwab and Company Inc. In terms of spending power in the auction room he is one of the big boys, up there with Pinault and Saatchi, and like them, he is certainly a major-league collector. But these days it takes more than a few billion and a collection to be truly powerful and neither he nor his art has the artworld high profile of his billionaire peers. Which is not to say he’s in it solely for the investment potential. He may not have invested in a flashy space in his own name to show off his purchases for all to see, but this year Schwab was announced Chair of the Board of Trustees at SFMOMA, following a committed involvement of more than 20 years with the museum, which has included chairing fundraising campaigns.
