Obrist is arguably the OG ‘super-curator’, though arguably the model in which the exhibition organiser is as famous as the artists shown is coming into question. How has the artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries in London (though that is just one of his roles) maintained his relevance as times progress? HUO has an answer, one that he imparted to the Financial Times: ‘JG Ballard once told me that he thought my activity was more junction-making than curating.’ Obrist continues doing what he has always done best: know everyone and broker introductions, all day, every day, in person and across his two ever present mobile phones. In London there were shows for Arpita Singh, Giuseppe Penone, Peter Doig and Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley; while Obrist remains senior adviser at Maja Hoffmann’s LUMA Foundation, headed the Venice Architecture Biennale jury, conducted his usual relentless calendar of live conversations (he estimates he has several thousand hours of artist interviews from over the years) and found time to get his 2023 autobiography translated from French into English.
