The Delhi-based Raqs Media Collective (Monica Narula, Jeebesh Bagchi and Shuddhabrata Sengupta) is a lesson in artist hybridity: the word ‘raqs’ refers to a sense of awareness and presence attained by whirling, turning and ‘being in a state of revolution’. It is this oscillation between artmaking, teaching, talking, writing and curating that have made the group a ubiquitous presence over three decades. The trio, who have long taken time as their reference point, are naturally curious about the flattening effects any AI revolution might have, and are investigating the artmaking possibilities of the technology for a solo show in May at the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society at the University of Chicago. A second show, at Hanart TZ Gallery, Hong Kong, presented sketched diagrams, landscapes and characters as propositions to ‘rethink the human being’. To concentrate on shows, however, would miss the point of a practice in which essays for the Lisbon Architecture Triennale and The Wellcome Collection, and talks in London and Oslo (they are finalists to design a memorial for the 2011 terrorist attack on the city) are as primary.
