The body of London-based abstract artist Sarah Cunningham has been found on the tracks at a London underground station. She had been missing since Saturday night. The death is currently not being treated as suspicious by police.
Numerous appeals for information on her whereabouts had been issued in the 24 hours following her disappearance, including by Lisson Gallery, who have represented her since 2023, and the Royal College of Art, where she completed a painting MA in 2022.
She was last seen leaving a residential building in Camden, North London. In a statement, Scotland Yard said the emergency services had been called to reports of a casualty on the tracks at Chalk Farm Underground station shortly after 1am on Monday.
Cunningham was a recipient of the Ali H. Alkazzi Scholarship Award while studying at the RCA. She participated in the La Wayaka Current Artist Residency in Armila, while her oil paintings have been included in exhibitions at Almine Rech, Max Hetzler and the CICA Vancouver.
She had staged two solo shows at Lisson Gallery, the first in the summer of 2023 at their London location, and the second in Los Angeles from June to August 2024. The latter, titled Flight Paths, explored aerial and bodily movements in the young painter’s work.
