The UK subsidiary of Hauser & Wirth has been charged with breaching British-imposed sanctions against Russia.

Following an investigation by HM Revenue & Customs, the UK tax authority, it is alleged the London branch of Hauser & Wirth made available a painting to a person connected with Russia.

Hauser & Wirth said it ‘strongly contests this charge’ and intends to plead not guilty as the case proceeds to Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

In response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, since April 2022 the UK has banned the export of art and other luxury items valued over £250 to the country. Companies breaking the sanctions are subject to an unlimited fine.

The purchaser of the artwork is not personally sanctioned, however, and not accused of acting improperly. Cited in the case alongside Hauser & Wirth is art shipping company Artay Rauchwerger Solomons.
