Raphael Fonseca and Yina Jiménez Suriel will curate the next edition of Sequences, the biennial art festival in Reykjavík, which takes place October 2027.
Selected from an open call, the pair described their appointment as ‘an exceptional opportunity to learn about the art scene in Iceland and across the Nordic region’.
They said in a statement: ‘We also hope that, in parallel, our experiences, which have been predominantly working with artists from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the so-called Global South, can inform Iceland’s creative community.’
Fonseca, born in Rio de Janeiro, has headed up the Department of Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art at the Denver Art Museum since 2021. He was the chief curator of the 14th Mercosul Biennial in Porto Alegre and is member of the curatorial team for the 3rd Counterpublic Triennial, scheduled to take place in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, in 2026. Jiménez Suriel also worked on the Porto Alegre show and was born and is based in the Dominican Republic. She is the curator of The Current IV, a curatorial programme at Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary TBA21–Academy, and serves as associate editor for Latin America and the Caribbean at Contemporary And (C&).
The 2027 exhibition will be the thirteenth edition of Sequences. The festival originally focused on video and performance, but has broadened its remit.
