Korea Artist Prize 2020 shortlist announced

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) has announced four shortlisted artists for its annual Korea Artist Prize. The ninth edition of the award has selected artists that use ‘innovative aesthetics to address the most compelling social issues of our time’: Kim Minae, Lee Seulgi, Jung Yoonsuk, and Chung Heeseung.

The artists’ works are on show at MMCA through 4 April 2021. Kim’s 1. 안녕하세요 2. Hello is a site-specific work comprising sculptures and structures that highlight the unique architectural structure of MMCA’s Gallery 2; in the same gallery space, Lee’s newest work Dong Dong Dari Gori, reflects on traditional Korean architecture, craft and folklore through hanging glass containers that hold water from different rivers around the world, accompanied by Korean folk songs; Jung presents Tomorrow, which combines a feature film with photography and video installations focusing on people who produce, consume or use surrogate human forms; and Chung has worked with 24 fellow artists to create her recent productions titled Dancing Together in a Sinking Ship and Poem for Alcoholics and Angels, a series of portrait photographs, images of objects from their daily lives, and short fragments of conversations that she had with them while producing this work.

The winner of the Korea Artist Prize 2020 will be announced in February 2021, and will be awarded an additional grant of KRW 10 million.
