Art Basel opens online viewing rooms as alternative to cancelled Hong Kong edition

Following the cancellation of Art Basel Hong Kong due to the coronavirus outbreak, the fair organisers have launched an online platform where exhibitors can showcase artwork. The viewing rooms have been initiated with the intent that they will be executed parallel to the physical fairs, allowing gallerists to show additional works. For the first run, however, Art Basel will allow works that were to be shown at the Hong Kong fair to be presented at no cost to the participants.

Adeline Ooi, director for Asia at Art Basel stated: ‘We are delighted to be able to premiere this new initiative now. While the Online Viewing Rooms cannot replace our 2020 fair in Hong Kong, we firmly hope that it will provide a strong support to all the galleries who were affected by the cancellation of our March show.’

The online viewing rooms will be open to invited buyers on 18 March for a VIP preview and from the 20th to the 25th they will be open to the public. Information on participating galleries for the first edition will be released in the following weeks.
