Members of the feminist Russian art-punk group Pussy Riot Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina made an appearance in the Season 3 of House of Cards, during a dinner scene at the White House, where they stand up to the Putin-alike fictional Russian President, Viktor Petrov.
Acting as themselves, Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina interrupt Petrov’s speech, to criticise his dictatorial policies before smashing their champagne glasses and walking out on the dinner. The episode ends with Pussy Riot’s new song, “Don’t Cry Genocide,” co-written with Le Tigre.
This is not the first time the fictional universe of TV series references the contemporary art world: in Sex and the City (Season 6, Episode 12), Carrie and Charlotte attend a performance by Aleksandr Petrovsky, a fictional artist directly inspired by Marina Abramovic and her living installation The House with the Ocean View, shown at Sean Kelly gallery in New York.
