West Dean College of Arts and Conservation have partnered with the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, to invite artists to apply for a residency at the college which will culminate with a solo exhibition at the gallery (October–December 2019). The residency has been created to mark the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus – one of the most significant and influential art schools of the twentieth century that encouraged radical experimentation in performance, film, photography, architecture and design.

The residency takes place over three weeks in March 2019 and offers full board, accommodation and studio space. During the residency the artist will have access to West Dean’s resources and facilities including the Historic House and the college’s collection and archive. The artist will be given the option to return to West Dean for one week in the summer of 2019 to further support the solo exhibition at the De La Warr Pavilion.

As part of the residency, the artist will engage with post-graduate students on the Fine Arts programmes at West Dean, presenting an artist’s talk, tutorials and/or seminar sessions, workshops or group critiques. The time allocated to these activities should be equivalent to two full days. This may take place during the residency or the exhibition.

The artist’s exhibition will present work produced during the West Dean residency but may also include existing works.

The selected artist will receive a fee of £2500. An additional budget for materials, travel, and exhibition production is allocated separately.

Application requirements:

Open to all artists living and working in the EU. With at least two years of exhibiting experience, the applicant will have interests that ‘align with, or speak to, the Bauhaus (established or lesser known), its origins, methodologies, and how Bauhaus may remain useful today’.

Deadline: 16 September 2018

More information and how to apply can be found on West Dean’s website here.
