Patrick D. Flores has been announced as the artistic director of the next Singapore Biennale, schedule to open in 2019. This edition, along with the 2021 one, will be organised by the Singapore Art Museum.
Currently a professor of art studies at the Department of Art Studies at the University of the Philippines and curator at the Vargas Museum in Manila, Flores curated the Philippine pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale and the Gwangju Biennale’s 2008 exhibition Position Papers. In 2014 he was a guest scholar of the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.
In a statement, Flores said he intended to ‘turn the Biennale into an intersection between a festival and a seminar, a moment to think through what is happening around us and a time to take in the creative energy of the region’.
