Salma Tuqan has been announced as the new Director of Nottingham Contemporary.
Tuqan will join from Delfina Foundation, where she has been Deputy Director since 2019. For the last eight years she has also worked as the Contemporary Middle East Curator at London’s V&A, and previously as Head of Artists’ Projects at Art Dubai in the four years following its inauguration in 2007. Tuqan has also contributed to or facilitated curatorial projects including Palestine c/o Venice (53rd Venice Biennale, 2009), the Wind Tunnel Project (Farnborough, 2014) and Until my veins collapse (Mac Lyon, 2022).
Tuqan expressed her excitement to join Nottingham Contemporary, citing its ‘collaborative spirit and open-ended research led approach’ in particular. ‘I’m grateful to be entrusted with stewarding the organisation’s next chapter and am looking forward to working with the team and board to build on its unique character and collectively imagine its future.’ The gallery this year received renewed funding from Arts Council England, at an acute moment of widespread cuts to cultural institutions battling to recover after a series of lockdowns.
Matt Symonds, Chair of Nottingham Contemporary, praised Tuqan’s ‘expertise in cultural leadership and international curatorial experience [which] will bring a fresh perspective to our organisation, its programme, and to the city of Nottingham’.
Tuqan will take up her position in March 2023.
