Pantone reveals ‘colour of the year’

Following a particularly restless year, Pantone has announced two colours – Ultimate Gray and Illuminating – as ‘2021 Pantones of the year’, hoping to convey a message of ‘strength and hopefulness’.

Pantone 13-0647 Illuminating is a bright yellow described by the colour company as providing ‘energy, clarity and hope’, while Pantone 17-5104 Ultimate Gray, ‘the colour of pebbles on the beach’, will instil ‘encouraging feelings of composure, steadiness and resilience’.

The Colour of the Year is selected annually by experts from The Pantone Institute, through research and trend analysis, taking into consideration the entertainment and film industries, art exhibitions and production, fashion, design, leisure and lifestyle trends, and wider socioeconomic phenomena. The process started back in 2000, with recent ‘colours of the year’ including Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue (2020), Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral (2019) and Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet (2018).
