Ten artists and composers have been awarded £75,000 each by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Five visual artists, Anne Bean, Barry Anthony Finan, Mikhail Karikis, Grace Ndiritu and Sean Roy Parker, and five composers, Auclair, Andrew Hamilton, Rachel Musson, Aidan O’Rourke and Mark Sanders, are this year’s recipients of the Awards for Artists.
Now in its 30th year, 2024 marks an increase in the award from £60,000 to £75,000 each. The award is unique in allowing recipients to use their award as they wish, and offers them the freedom to develop their creative ideas without financial pressures. The scheme has benefited over 350 UK artists since its launch in 1994, and represents the largest individual awards given to visual artists and composers in the UK.
The judges for the visual arts category of this year’s awards were Jane Hamlyn (chair of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation), artist Lisa Milroy, Nigel Prince (Director, Artes Mundi), Gabriela Salgado (Director, The Showroom) and Salma Tuqan (Director, Nottingham Contemporary). Judging the composers category were writer and broadcaster Kevin Le Gendre, composer Laurence Crane, jazz promoter Tony Dudley-Evans, Maija Handover (Sound UK Associate) and folk singer Kellie While.
