Daniel H. Weiss, former president and CEO of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, has been appointed the new director and CEO of Philadelphia Art Museum, the museum’s board of trustees has announced.
Weiss worked at the Met from 2015 to 2023. Prior to that, he was President of Haverford College (2013-2015) and President of Lafayette College (2005-2013). His post at Philadelphia Art Museum will begin on 1 December, and he will work in the role until ‘at least 2028’.
The announcement follows the news that former Philadelphia Art Museum director and chief executive Sasha Suda is suing the institution for terminating her employment ‘without a valid basis’, after she was dismissed three years into her five-year contract.
‘We are extraordinarily fortunate to have someone of Dan Weiss’s caliber and experience step into this critical role,’ stated Ellen Caplan, Chair of the Board of Trustees, in a press release.
‘Dan’s proven track record of museum leadership, his deep understanding of the field, and his ability to navigate complex institutional challenges make him ideally suited to provide stability and strategic direction during this critical period for the art museum.’
