Rodrigo Moura has been appointed artistic director of the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA). The Brazilian curator comes from El Museo del Barrio in New York, where he has served as chief curator for six years.
He was previously deputy curator at the Museu de Arte São Paulo (MASP) between 2016 and 2019, where he arrived from Inhotim Institute, the private art foundation and botanical garden in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Moura arrives at MALBA after a time of instability for the instition, following the departure in 2021 of Gabriela Rangel.
Founded in 2001 by Argentine real-estate developer Eduardo Costantini to house his privte collection, the museum is operated by the not-for-profit Fundación MALBA – Costantini. From an initial donation of 220 Latin American artworks, it now houses over 600 works by artists, including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Tarsila do Amaral, Wifredo Lam, Xul Solar, Joaquín Torres-García, Emilio Pettorutti and Cándido Portinari. MALBA—PUERTOS, a satellite space in the town of Escobar, 45 kilometres from the Argentine capital, opened in September.
