Ryoji Ikeda has been awarded the 2026 Nam June Paik Prize, the Nam June Paik Art Center has announced. He will have a solo exhibition at the Nam June Paik Art Center in 2027.
Based between Paris and Kyoto, Ikeda is a media artist whose work explores the characteristics of sound and light through installations and live performances. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions internationally, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo; Park Avenue Armory, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Taipei Fine Arts Museum; and 180 Studios, London.
Sabine Himmelsbach, director of the House of Electronic Arts (HEK), Basel, and member of the jury stated that Ikeda ‘has fundamentally reshaped the aesthetic language of media art through the integration of sound, data, mathematics, computation, and immersive installations. His practice of translating scientific and computational systems into profound aesthetic experiences extends Paik’s experimental legacy into the age of data and algorithmic culture.’
Ikeda will receive the prize at a ceremony at the Nam June Paik Art Center, Yongin, on 8 September.
