The Serpentine, London and FLAG Art Foundation, New York, have announced a 10-year collaboration in the form of a new prize that will select one artist every two years to be awarded £200,000.

Artists will be considered based on a nomination process, followed by a final selection made by a rotating jury of curators, art historians and artists. Selected artists must have been exhibiting professionally for less than 10 years and working to grow their international presence. Each recipient will stage a solo exhibition at both institutions, accompanied by a catalogue and live programme.

‘We are delighted to launch the largest contemporary art prize in the UK’, said Hans Ulrich Obrist, artistic director of the Serpentine, in a statement. ‘What makes this prize so significant is its focus on artists who have not yet received the visibility or recognition they deserve.’

Glenn Fuhrman, founder of The FLAG Art Foundation, said:

‘This partnership marks FLAG’s most significant commitment to artists beyond the United States and we could not be happier to do so with Serpentine. By collaborating with Serpentine to create this prize, we are reaffirming our institutional commitment to champion contemporary artists and to continue providing new opportunities for those artists to share their work with art-lovers everywhere. We look forward to unveiling the forthcoming program of exhibitions and announcing the jury in the months ahead.’

The first artist will be selected in 2026, with an exhibition set to debut at the Serpentine in autumn 2027 and travelling to FLAG in spring 2028.
