An attendee at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Australia’s private event has damaged two major fabric installations by South Korean artist Do Ho Suh. The two pieces were installed at the artist’s first solo exhibition in Australia, which closed on 27 February.
MCA Australia’s partner, the media group Bloomberg had sponsored and hosted the event for its staff. Although MCA Australia did not disclose the titles of the damaged works, the UK’s Daily Mail reported earlier that a tipster knocked into ‘a series of intricately designed doorways’, referring to one of Do Ho Suh’s Hub series (2015 –).
‘(It) appeared to detach two “doors”. Definitely going hard for a Monday night!’ A witness told Daily Mail.
The Hub series comprises up-to-scale replicas of different interior spaces where the artist has lived – including Seoul, New York, Berlin, and London. The brightly coloured installations allow visitors to walk through the interconnected domestic corridors, entry ways and foyers.
Do Ho Suh’s is not the first artwork to be damaged by the audience this year. Last month a Jeff Koons Balloon Dog, valued at $42,000, was dropped and smashed by a collector at Art Wynwood, a Miami art fair.
