The Asia Society in New York has announced the appointment of Yasufumi Nakamori, currently Senior Curator of International Art (Photography) at Tate Modern, as its new director.

‘I’m extremely excited about leading the next chapter of the Asia Society Museum and the global organisation’s arts and culture program,’ said Yasufumi. ‘I would like the museum to become the engine for expanding the scholarly and curatorial field of Asian and Asian diaspora art by looking at Asia’s relationship with the world throughout history.’

At Tate Modern, Nakamori has mounted an exhibition of South African artist Zanele Muholi. Previously, Nakamori was curator at the department of photography and new media at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. From 2008 to 2016, he served as curator of photography at Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts. He has also taught graduate seminars at Rice University and authored books including Katsura: Picturing Modernism in Japanese Architecture (2010).

Nakamori will start his role in August.
