French artist Bernard Frize is the winner of the 2015 Käthe Kollwitz Prize. Created in 1960 in honour of German artist Käthe Kollowitz, this 12,000 Euros art prize is awarded every year by the Berlin Academy of Arts to a visual artist whose life and work are centred in Berlin. This year’s judges and Academy members included Turkish artist Ayşe Erkmen , artist and previous recipient of the prize Mona Hatoum and German conceptual artist Karin Sander.
The prize will be awarded to Frize on 10 September 2015, leading the way to an exhibition of his work at the Berlin Academy of Arts from 11 September to 25 October. A catalogue will also be produced to accompany the exhibition.
Bernard Frize was born in 1954 in Saint-Mandé, France, and now lives in Paris and Berlin. In 2011 he received the Fred Thieler Prize for Painting Berlinischen gallery. His works are in major public and private collections, including the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris; Kunstmuseum Bonn; Museum of Modern Art, Frankfurt / Main; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; Kunsthalle Zurich; MOCA, Los Angeles.
