Amanda de la Garza Mata appointed president of CIMAM

Amanda de la Garza Mata has been appointed president of the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art (CIMAM). She will take over the role from Suhanya Raffel.

Currently artistic deputy director of the Museo Nacional Centro de Art Reina Sofía in Madrid, Mata will lead the committee from 2026 to 2028, along with the 14 newly elected members of the board.

The new members of the board are: Zeina Arida, director of Mathaf, Qatar; Raphael Chikukwa, executive director of National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Harare; Doryun Chong, artistic director and chief curator of M+, Hong Kong; Joselina Cruz, director of curator of Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Manila; Tatiana Cuevas, general director of Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáeno, Mexico City; Amanda de la Garza Mata, deputy artistic director, Museo Nacional Centro de Art Reina Sofía; Elvira Dyangani Ose, director of Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona; Shabbir Hussain Mustafa, chief curator of Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; Clara M Kim, chief curator and director of curatorial affairs of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Sunjung Kim, artistic director of Art Sonje Center, Seoul; Pablo Lafuente, artistic director of Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro; Chus Martínez, head of Institute Art Gender Nature, Basel; Stephanie Rosenthal, director of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi; and Kamini Sawhney, artistic director of Public Arts Project, BLR Hubba, Bengaluru.

‘As a Board, we will seek to preserve and enhance the core values of CIMAM: diversity, solidarity, collective and critical thinking,’ Mata said in a statement. ‘Art museums and cultural ecosystems face nowadays enormous challenges and threats; therefore, CIMAM should be a place where museums and professionals can discuss the present and future of institutions through imagination, commitment, and ethical principles. At the same time, CIMAM should be a place of understanding, sharing, and togetherness.’

Founded in 1962, CIMAM is a global network of modern and contemporary art experts that aims to provide ‘a forum for communication, cooperation, information exchange, and debate on issues of common interest.’
