This year Hollywood mogul Emanuel left Endeavor, the entertainment group he cofounded, and bought Frieze, the magazine and art fair that his former company put up for sale last year. In a deal valued at ‘nearly $200m’, and retaining Fox as CEO, the acquisition gives Emanuel control of seven events around the world. These include the original London edition and secondary-market offshoot Masters (at which one dealer reported sales ‘three or four times better than last year’); branded fairs in New York, Los Angeles and Seoul; and The Armory Show in New York and Expo Chicago, firmly establishing the US as Frieze’s base of activity. Among the investors in the new company are Abu Dhabi-based media group IMI and the Qatar Investment Authority, so it is no surprise that, following Art Basel’s announcement of plans to launch in Qatar next year, Frieze presented plans for a Gulf fair of its own, in Abu Dhabi. Art fairs may be something of a dicey proposition in today’s art market, but clearly Frieze’s rental gallery-space in London is also doing something right: the company opened Frieze House Seoul in September, replicating the model.
