The London-based Muriel and Freddie Salem are two of the quiet British base of collectors who have contributed to London’s newfound (and still tenuous) place as a centre of the contemporary artworld. Their Cranford Collection reads like a mini-retrospective of the last quarter-century in British and international art, with work from artists such as Sarah Lucas, Damien Hirst and Gillian Wearing, as well as from younger artists Rebecca Warren and Mark Titchner, among others. The collection has been put together by Andrew Renton, the director of curatorial studies at Goldsmiths in London. The Salems are also major contributors to programmes in London, including Artangel.
