The British-born, Trinidad-based artist followed up 2007’s auction room triumph, when his painting White Canoe (1991) sold for £5.7 million, with a blockbuster midcareer travelling show launched at Tate Britain. Balancing the mass appeal, his StudioFilmClub in the Caribbean, posters for which were included in his retrospective, has something of a cult status, too. His talents were also recognised by the Society for Modern Art at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, which awarded Doig the 15th Wolfgang Hahn Prize, worth €100,000, in April.
