Christine Macel has been ‘reassigned’ away from her role as the director of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.

Last week the Paris institution announced Macel would become a ‘scientific and artistic advisor’ to the president of the board of directors until her contract runs out in October 2025. No such role has previously existed.

The change of job title follows a workplace investigation, prompted by the resignation of an unprecedented number of staff. The HR audit found ‘social and psychological’ problems within the workplace environment.

Macel was previously chief curator at the Centre Pompidou from 2000 through 2022. In 2017 she curated the Venice Biennale.

The Musée des Arts Décoratifs is charged with looking after a public collection, housed in a wing of Louvre, but does not receive public funds for its operating budget. Additionally it operates the Musée Nissim de Camondo, housing the Moïse de Camondo collection, a library and two schools.

In a complex leadership structure, director Macel worked alongside Sylvie Corréard as director-general. Macel’s predecessor, Olivier Gabet, only served one contract term.
