The Art Gallery of South Australia has announced that Ellie Buttrose will curate the 2026 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. Buttrose curated the Australia Pavilion for this year’s Venice Biennale; the installation, kith and kin by Kamilaroi and Bigambul artist Archie Moore – featuring an expansive hand-drawn family tree that spans 65,0000 years and a memorial to First Nations peoples who died in police custody – won the Golden Lion award for Best National Participation. It is the first time Australia has been presented with the prize.

Buttrose is currently curator of Contemporary Australian Art at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane. Her most recently curated exhibitions include Living Patterns (2023) and Embodied Knowledge (2022), a survey of contemporary Queensland art cocurated with Katina Davidson.

Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art will be on view 27 February – 7 June 2026.
