Ian White, 1971–2013

Ian White, artist, curator and contributor to ArtReview for many years, has died after a long illness. Within his own art practice White’s main area of interest was performance, but he also found a well-respected career as a curator and educator utilising his extensive knowledge of film and video. From 2001 to 2010 he was the adjunct film curator at the Whitechapel Gallery, London and since 2007 he was the facilitator on the LUX Associate Artists Programme, where, with biting wit and incisive knowledge, he helped innumerable number of graduate artists develop their practice. In the February 2007 issue of ArtReview, White profiled Robert Beavers. He described the American filmmaker as ‘extraordinary and without concession to market of cultural forces… [who] ought to be a clarion call to the culture industry about the virtues of taking time for the sake of looking’. The same words could be attributed to the writer’s career too.
