South Korean boyband BTS have become the latest to sign up to curator Hans Ulrich Obrist’s ‘infinite exhibition’ do it (around the world), which invites artists to share their conceptual instructions for a possible artwork.
The K-pop septet’s contribution ‘conveys the importance of connecting beyond boundaries. It resonates with the message BTS has been sharing through their music and other activities, including the UN ’Speak Yourself’ speech and CONNECT, BTS project,’ organisers said in a statement.
The popstars join the likes of artists Yoko Ono, Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin, Olafur Eliasson, designer Virgil Abloh and musician Arca in the do it lineup, which has amassed more than 400 contributors since Obrist first initiated the project in Paris in 1993, alongside artists Christian Boltanski and Bertrand Lavier. The project was recently rebooted in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic this year as Do-it (around the world).
The do it contributions have been made available on a Google Arts & Culture hub with new instructions uploaded each week. This is not the first time that BTS have collaborated with the artworld – at the beginning of the year they launched an international initiative with artists including Antony Gormley, Ann Veronica Janssens and Tomás Saraceno installing artworks around the world, according to the band’s philosophy of ‘love and care’.
