The organisers of Momentum biennial have announced the list of participating artists for its 12th edition.

Curated by Tenthaus, the first art collective to helm the Norwegian biennial, Momentum 12: Together as to gather will feature over 90 artists, collectives and institutions. They include Gudskul, a pedagogical knowledge-sharing platform formed by Jakarta-based collectives ruangrupa, Serrum and Grafis Huru Hara; Morag Keil, a Scottish artist whose works conduct a ‘rigorous antievangelism’ for modern consumption; WET, a Czech collective working with graffiti, performance and text-based work; Germain Ngoma, a Zambian/Norwegian artist; Dáiddadállu, a Sami artist collective; and Stephanie Lüning, a German artist known for eye-catching public foam works. Other international exhibitions will also contribute works, with biennials Göteborg, Helsinki, Larnaca, Seoul Mediacity, Salangen and Tokyo set to take part.

‘Tenthaus as an art collective is moving toward a model of polyphonic co-authorship. Polyphonic suggests the harmonic possibility of producing more than one independent melody at a time in a single composition,’ the collective said in a statement. ‘To a great extent, this is how Tenthaus functions; each individual practice both resonates and amplifies itself through collective work. We produce and involve many themes and curatorial ideas at the same time. In this way, we are able to explore a myriad of concurrences; subjects and artistic forms each carrying resonance and meaning.’

The collective’s appointment is in keeping with a wider shift in the artworld towards new methods of curating – as most notably evidenced by artist collective ruangrupa’s direction of Documenta 15 in 2022, the influence of which was both marked and divisive amid allegations of including antisemitic content.

Momentum 11 suffered a rocky launch after the organisers fired their curator just weeks before opening, with artists consequently withdrawing their work in protest.

Momentum 12 will open at Galleri F15 in Norway on 10 June 2023.
