Now in its sixth edition, the Yokohama Triennale has announced it will run under the title Islands, Constellations and Galapagos, from 4 August – 5 November 2017. Held across the Yokohama Museum of Art and the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No 1, the triennale will ‘reexamine the state of global connectivity and isolation from various angles. The exhibition will potentially consider, among other things, the following: the archipelago-style existence of regions and cultural spheres; the world that is generally growing conservative; distinctive evolutions and diversifications that happen within closed environments; and what kinds of potential human imagination and creativity may manage to cultivate.’
Interdisciplinary in its core, the concept emerged from a series of meeting between the artistic directors, which include nine professionals from diverse fields and generations (including artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, anatomist Yoro Takeshi and philosopher and president of Kyoto University Washida Kiyokazu). ‘Yokohama Rounds’, a series of public forums exploring ideas surrounding this year’s theme, will kick off in January in anticipation of the triennale.
