Austrian-born, Germany-based curator Max Hollein has been appointed as director of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, one of the largest art institutions in California, The Art Newspaper reports. Since 2006, Hollein has been directing simultaneously the Schirn Kunsthalle, the Städel Museum and the Liebieghaus Sculpture Collection, in Frankfurt, where he organised shows ranging from Sandro Botticelli (2009-10) to Jeff Koons (2012). From 1995–2000, Hollein worked closely with Guggenheim director Thomas Krens in New York. He will take up his new post from 1 June.
