Lithuanian artist Emilija Škarnulytė has been announced as the winner of the 2019 edition of the Future Generation Art Prize at the award ceremony in the Pinchuk Art Centre, Kyiv. Škarnulytė will receive $100,000 (approx. £76,000), including $60,000 of cash money and $40,000 towards the production of work. Two special prizes, each worth $10,000, were awarded to South African artist Gabrielle Goliath and UK-based duo Cooking Sections.
The three winners were selected among a shortlist of 21 artists and collectives, by an international jury comprising Pablo León de la Barra, curator at large, Latin America, Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, New York; Björn Geldhof, artistic director, Pinchuk Art Centre, Kyiv; Gabi Ngcobo, curator, 10th Berlin Biennale; Tim Marlow, artistic director, Royal Academy of Arts, London; and Hoor Al Qasimi, president, Sharjah Art Foundation and International Biennial Association. Work by each of the 21 artists will be on view in a group exhibition organised by the Pinchuk Art Centre as an official collateral event of the 2019 Venice BIennale at Palazzo Ca’ Tron, and Škarnulytė will present her solo show at the Pinchuk Art Centre in Kyiv, in 2020.
