Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury wins Samdani Art Award

Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury has won the Samdani Art Award, the biannual residency prize awarded on the occasion of the Dhaka Art Summit. Sponsored by industrialists and collectors Nadia and Rajeeb Samdani, Chowdhury receives a six-week residency at the Delfina Foundation in London. Chowdhury has an MA in printmaking from the University of Dhaka, though his work has since embraced sculpture, installation and video. This year’s jury was chaired by Delfina Foundation director Aaron Cezar and featured artists Sheela Gowda, Runa Islam, Subodh Gupta and Mona Hatoum, who chose Chowdhury’s work from a shortlist assembled by Swiss Institute director Simon Castets. Chowdhury’s multimedia sculpture, The Soul Who Fails to Fly into the Space, won out over works by Ahmed Rasel, Aprita Singh Lopa, Asfika Rahman, Debasish Shom, Marzia Farhana, Opper Zaman, Palash Bhattacharjee, Rakib Ahmed, Reetu A. Sattar and Sabbir Alam. An exhibition of the shortlisted artists forms part of the summit.
