The Hasselblad Foundation has announced that Stan Douglas, the Vancouver-based artist, has won the 2016 International Award in Photography. Douglas will receive the sum of SEK 1,000,000 (approximately €110,000), and his work will be the object of a new exhibition, opening at the Hasselbad Center in Sweden on 18 October 2016 in conjunction with the release of a new book by the artist.

Douglas has built his artistic career through film and photography, working with large casts and coordinating stage design and costume to create speculative histories. Since the late 1980s Douglas has produced observational films concerned with the future of civil society. His photographic work moved from an early documentary style to one that explores historical issues such as emancipation movements and civil unrest.

‘Stan Douglas’s interdisciplinary work bridges the gap between photography, film and the performing arts in an innovative way, while at the same time engaging in pressing social issues,’ states Christina Backman, Managing Director of the Hasselblad Foundation.

He has held exhibitions at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (2015); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2014); Carré d’Art-Musée d’Art Contemporain, Nîmes (2013); Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minnesota (2012); The Power Plant, Toronto (2011); Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and Württembergischer Kunstverein, Stuttgart (2007); and The Studio Museum in Harlem, NY (2005).
