English Translation

The Unnatural Death of the Poem

I lament the whole day trying to write a poem

All day long, words keep going to-and-fro

But I have no pen, no paper near me

I have a hammer, shovel, spade and sledgehammer in hand

Whatever can be done with these, least of all can poems be written

The verses for a poem are not subject to my will

They keep moving according to their whims

I want to scream and say

This time is not allocated for poetry

I have sold this time to livelihood.

I have reached the final chapter of life

I don’t get scared from its wavering eyes

I have seen many ups and downs with my eyes

I don’t want to see anything more in this one life

I have seen life, a mere gap from death, being saved

I have seen people left disabled from accidents at the workplaces

I have seen everything except for my own death

Now it’s my time to see life

I want to see the lovely face of my beloved

I want to see my child growing up

I want to see moonlight on the night of a full moon

I want to prevent the unnatural death of the poem.

Breaking the Waves is on view at chi K11 art museum until 17 October
