Watch: trailer for Netflix’s artworld scammer Anna Delvey series

Netflix has released a teaser trailer for its upcoming Shonda Rhimes-produced true crime series on artworld scammer Anna Delvey (real name: Anna Sorokin). The show Inventing Anna is based on the 2018 viral New York Magazine story ‘How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People’ by Jessica Pressler. In the show, Anna Chlumsky takes on the role of a reporter loosely based on Pressler; Julia Garner plays Sorokin.

In case you need a refresher: Moscow-born Sorokin posed as a millionaire German socialite and collector (with a story about setting up a new arts foundation in Manhattan), and proceeded to con her way through New York’s one percent – through the worlds of fashion, art and luxury lifestyle – before being exposed in 2017. She was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison in 2019 for defrauding hotels, banks, restaurants and others to the tune of USD$200,000 – the judge said she was ‘stunned by the depth of the defendant’s deception, her labyrinthine lies that kept her con afloat […] She was blinded by the glitter and glamour of New York City.’

Sorokin was released on parole earlier this year; she faces deportation back to Germany. Inventing Anna will be released on 11 February 2022.
