Yellin, known for his trippy eco-techno glass sculptures, is the founder and director of Pioneer Works, a nonprofit residency programme and exhibition space that opened in 2012 in Brooklyn. The organisation is known for its focus on art at the intersection of science and technology, which has attracted many younger artists to its residency. Notable alumni include American Artist, Jes Fan and Martine Syms. Operating with a $9.1m budget out of a former ironworks that now welcomes around 50,000 visitors annually, the venue has become a go-to destination for thought-provoking live spectacles. It recently hosted Mindy Seu’s interactive, Instagram-based performance A Sexual History of the Internet (2025) and ARMAGEDDON (2025), a drag wrestling show by Choke Hole. In July a crowd gathered around an enormous foam baby created by MSCHF – in reference to the Judgment of Solomon – waiting to see it sliced to pieces, while online buyers made bids to split the cost of the sculpture. Amid an exciting year, the organisation has quietly made headway towards the construction of a public astronomical observatory on the roof of its building.
