Perrotin was one of the first Western galleries in Hong Kong, opening a space in Central in 2012; 13 years later, the gallerist’s Asian footprint now extends to Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and Dubai. Unlike moves by other dealers to fully extract themselves from the SAR, he’s just announced plans for a new gallery space, relocating from dockside back to Central – and he’s shown that he’s not averse to taking bets on cities others have shied away from. Reversing the Brexit trend, in May Perrotin opened new premises in London, at Claridge’s Hotel, inaugurating the space with a show for French street artist JR. An even more famous face could be found in Paris, where musician Pharrell Williams curated a show of Black female artists, including Carrie Mae Weems, Zanele Muholi and Esther Mahlangu. In New York, Xavier Veilhan and Sophie Calle had shows, while the LA space, minted last year, exhibited Aya Takano, a Superflat protégé of Perrotin artist Takashi Murakami.
