At seventy-nine, with a longestablished and globally recognisable signature crumpled-ball-of-metal style of architecture, and with the iconic Guggenheim Bilbao ten years behind him, you’d think that there wouldn’t be much left for Frank Gehry to do. He’s already changed his name (from Goldberg), driven a delivery truck, served in the US Army, made a guest appearance in an episode of The Simpsons, designed a line of jewellery for Tiffany’s, been the subject of a feature film, hung out with Brad Pitt and launched a software division, Gehry Technologies, so that architects around the world can be more like him. But the original ‘starchitect’ has never been one to sit back. During the past year he’s seen the unveiling of his first building in New York, collaborated on an exhibition with longtime friend Sophie Calle and launched his plans for the latest $200-million branch of the Guggenheim franchise in Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, work continues on Bernard Arnault’s Louis Vuitton Foundation for Creation, due to open by 2010 and located in Paris’s Bois de Boulogne, which Gehry claims will ‘symbolise France’s devotion to culture’. Just as much, presumably, as it symbolises the artworld big-hitters’ continuing devotion to Gehry.
