Colomboscope, the contemporary arts festival of which Ginwala is artistic director, has been instrumental in the development of the Sri Lankan art scene and supporting artists from the subaltern states. With its ninth edition around the corner (curated by Hajra Haider Karrar), Ginwala has been busy coordinating the 50 artists and collectives, musicians, choreographers, filmmakers and cultural organisers who take part. The outside world is taking note too: in March Ginwala curated the latest of the festival’s international collaborations, a group show at The Drawing Room, London, featuring artists from previous editions, including Lavkant Chaudhary, from the conflicted Terai region of Nepal, and Lado Bai, an Indigenous elder of the Bhil community in India. Ginwala brought her knowledge to this year’s Sharjah Biennial, joining the five-strong all-female curatorial team. The show of 650 works, including 200 new commissions, was conceived, she told Mousse, by ‘thinking from the gut, conveying a lexicon of emotion, lived ideas, and practices that matter to us right now’.
